Magnesium is a mineral that is critical for energy production and metabolism, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, and bone mineralization.  Its is a required cofactor for an estimated 300 enzymes.  Among the reactions catalyzed by these enzymes are fatty acid synthesis, protein synthesis, and glucose metabolism.. Magnesium status is also important for regulation of calcium balance through its effects on the parathyroid gland.  

May slightly reduce fractures and improve bone mass density for older adults, but more study is needed. Some scientific studies (multiple meta-analyses)  show small reductions in systolic blood pressure of 3-4 mm Hg, and diastolic blood pressure of 2-3 mmHg over 3-24 weeks, and improvements in sleep onset and duration of 15-16 minutes.  Some meta-analyses show mild reductions in anxiety symptoms.*

Extremely high intakes of magnesium can lead to irregular heartbeat and cardiac arrest.  Magnesium may interact with many medications.  Bisphosphonates (used to to treat osteoporosis) are not well absorbed if taken with Magnesium.  It may also reduce absorption of antibiotics if taken with Magnesium.  Diuretics can increase or decrease the loss of magnesium in urine.  Medications used to treat acid reflex may cause low blood levels of magnesium if taken over a long time.  Also, high doses of zinc supplements can interfere with the bodies ability to absorb and regulate magnesium.
